The company led by João Mariano, Agronomist , started his wine business in 2000/2001 with the planting of vineyards on three different wine farms, concerning their terroir (soil, climate and surrounding environment), in a total of 21.5 hectares.
João Mariano has devoted his entire professional life to the Algarve Agriculture, particularly irrigation, made his post-graduate studies in Israel in Fruits Irrigation Systems, and in the last 10 years in Viticulture. It also has a specialization in “Viticulture and Enology in Hot Climates”, obtained at Centro de Investigación y Formacion Agrárias (Jerez de la Frontera, Spain).
The company's aim was to produce quality wines in a region, ancestrally linked to vines and wine production, that, unfortunately, has lost is competitiveness in the last 25 years.
Certified Portuguese and French varieties were planted, some imported from France like Petit Verdot, Syrah, Tempranillo and Alicante Bouchet.
All the vineyards are watered and fertilized by drip irrigation that allows feed the plants, when they has the greatest need or in years when rainfall is less than required.
The water control is done through soil moisture sensors placed in various locations of the parcels of vines.
The wines produced are from grapes certified with Integrated Crop Management, respecting totally the Norms of Environmental Protection.
The company's winery is located at Quinta da Penina/Sítio da Torre, Portimão, where the grapes from the three farms are processed.
Quinta da Penina was part of a huge family estate that existed in the early 20th century, a major producer of cereals, dried fruit and wine. Quinta da Penina winery, is located at the same place were the old winery was, until the mid of the 20th century.
