The varieties used for wine production at Quinta da Penina are the traditional Portuguese and some French recognized quality wine grapes.
It´s a variety of French origin, widely cultivated in Portugal for many years.It has a high color intensity (dye variety) feature that is exploited to benefit less colored wines.
Produces wines with dark red color; when young they have a little vegetal aroma of spices and menthol. In time, the aroma turns to red fruit scents, reaching the jam.
Iberian red grape variety, from Spanish origin (Tempranillo), planted throughout Portugal with the names Aragonez/Tinta Roriz.
This grape has low acidity and high alcohol content. It produces wines with good color intensity, aromatically intense and complex.
They develop scents of plums and berries that turn more complex with the evolution; in the mouth they are smooth, well-structured and complex.
French red grape variety native of Bordeaux region. It is probably the most widely grown variety in the world.
It produces wines with a very interesting tannic structure. They are usually able for ageing in oak barrels.
The vegetal aroma of this grape gives way to more pleasant and complex aromas, when the grapes are well matured.
It is a red grape variety only existing with a productive quantity in the Algarve region, which makes it unique.
It has an outward appearance, with large and tricolor clusters (white, red and pink grapes).
Negra Mole produces pink to ruby ??colored wines, has a light flavor profile and is very aromatic and fruity.
Lightly pressed, it produces white musts, such as "Blanc de Noir".
Super fresh, mineral and saline wines, excellent for the best sparkling bases or for gastronomic whites.
Red grape variety originally from southwestern France (Medoc) considered improving quality of Bordeaux wines. It has no expression in Portugal. In the Algarve, Quinta da Penina pioneered their plantation and single variety winemaking.
When it is fully ripe, produces powerful wines, rich, full bodied and tannic. Presents aromas of black fruit (blackberry), spice, pencil shavings, tar and tastes like leather and tobacco.
These are wines of great quality, to be kept in cellar; in a blend, they can add body, color and liveliness to wines less exuberant.
French red grape variety native of Côtes du Rhône.
Their wines have good alcohol content, capable of ageing, with very good quality. Usually have an intense color, very aromatic, fine and complex (violet, olive, leather ...) with marked tannins and relatively weak acidity.
It cans also origin very fruity and interesting rosé wines.
Indigenous Portuguese red grape variety originally from northern Portugal, Douro and Beira. Considered the most valuable wine variety of Portugal has a high component of color, aroma and complexity.
The musts has medium/high acidity and high alcohol content; produce wines of great quality, soft, round and warm, reminding dark red berries, very ripe, with floral scents, dominated by violet and sweet scents remembering rock rose.
Produces wines with great ability to ageing.
Indigenous Portuguese red grape variety, spread throughout the country. It has a long tradition in the Algarve where it was called Crato Preto.
It originates musts with high natural acidity and medium alcohol content.
Produces wines with intense garnet color and black plum raisins aromas, herbaceous (associated with spices) and some pepper. In time, develops scents of jam, with complexity and finesse. In the mouth they are smooth, with some acidity.
Portuguese autochthonous white grape variety grows all over the country. It presents musts with high acidity and medium alcoholic level. It produces wines with citric color with high capacity for ageing.
The wines have aromas of some citrus fruit, sometimes mineral. Over the years they develop scents of honey.
In the mouth, they are acidulous with notes of fruit and some complexity.
Côdega de Larinho
Côdega de Larinho comes from the extreme northeast of Portugal, where the originated wines have a very marked character by the fruit.
This grape guarantees high yields, with dense clusters.
Medium maturing grape, originating wines of good complexity, fruity (tropical fruits) and flowers, not always of sufficient freshness due to their low acidity, but with an excellent aromatic profile and great persistence.
Portuguese white grape widespread throughout the country; also known as Síria or Roupeiro.
To show all their qualities it requires warm soil and a warm temperate climate, moderate, no rain in August / September.
It produces wines with a medium alcoholic and acid content, with citrus tones, intense aroma, with little notes of tropical fruits and ripe citrus.
In the Algarve can also produce fortified wines of great quality.
Portuguese white grape variety, with medium clusters and small yellowish green berries.
It is an early ripening grape variety, showing generally medium vigor and productivity; prefers dry soils and a moderate climate, showing good adaptation to the mechanical harvest.
Its high natural acidity makes it interesting for the preparation of batches with less acidic varieties.
It produces wines of high quality and with a reasonable aging capacity, with aromas of medium intensity, like orange flowers with more vegetal notes, presenting with liveliness, freshness and some persistence in the mouth.
A very Old Portuguese white grape variety, originated from North Portugal.
Presents high natural acidity (6-9 g / l ac. tart.) and very good alcohol content (14% vol.). At Algarve reveals a good mineral acidity, citrus aroma of green fruit and fine mineral notes.
Improver variety, originates excellent wines with good ageing ability.
It is a Portuguese autochthonous white grape variety from Douro region.
Presents an average natural acidity (4-6 g / l ac. Tart.) and very good alcohol content (13-14%vol.).
It has a good potential for single variety wines or in blends, with Sercial and Crato Branco (Síria).
It produces wines of great quality, with good ageing ability, good aromatic intensity, resembling chamomile, plum, giving a fruity bouquet with some complexity. In the mouth it is engaging, with a medium acidity, good body and pleasant aroma.
French white grape variety originally from the Rhône region
Produces wines with light clear golden color, with scents of flowers (acacia, violet and honey), spices and fruits, mainly peach and apricot.
It has low acidity and high alcohol content. It is sometimes used to soften and perfume red wines from Syrah.
Should be used in blends with more acid and less aromatic grapes.
